Inspirations for my "Portable Strobes" Project:

1970s colors and fashion:

Cindy Sherman's use of color:

The milky bathwater in Annie Liebovitz's photo of Angelina Jolie:

Fiona Apple's "Criminal" video:

I used two strobes, with various gels, in four different locations in my model's (Flannery Thelkeld) apartment. I shot digital on Heidi's Canon 40D. I'm pretty pumped about the images.

It seems a month has gone by, and I have yet to blog anything.

This is because I've been fucking up.

I just finally finished a project that I enjoy. I think it looks pretty nice, for the amount of strobe knowledge I have. It is infinitely frustrating to work in the studio, but I'm slowly retaining things and getting shit done.

Here's a sneak peek of my time in the large studio on the third floor:

This is a further exploration of a Photo 2 concept I've dubbed "Party By Myself". Kind of like a "I can do bad all by myself!!!" shtick, but it's pretty personal. I'm independent to a fault most times. I'm satisfied with the series, though the vent is a recurring thing that is just silly.

"Night"

Shooting went alright. There's a small window of time where interesting people are out and places are still open. For every one person who allowed me to take their photo, there were probably four that denied me. Slow shutter speeds and big apertures make for a non-sneaky demeanor, so I wasn't quite as aggressively sheisty as I normally am in the day time. I'm 79% satisfied with my series. I feel that I am in the same rut as Cole described to us the other day. A combination of technical setbacks and confidence issues still plague me as the semester rolls on. I feel like I can't get my footing, and I'm scrambling sideways to create series. That's been an issue also, my series cohesiveness. I can't do it? I don't know. Photography is so exciting to me; The chemicals, light, time, etc. It's still prestidigitation. I guess if I can keep that mindset I'll inevitably make it out of this. I'm lower than a snake's belly in a wagon rut right now!

Project 2 Favorites

Daylight Project

I'm pretty sure everyone has had some qualms about this project, seeing as how it rained scads. But we all pulled through, right?! I might not have. I had three inspirations for this project, and tried to do both because today started overcast and ended bright as shit. And fuck bringing my camera into the rain, because it's already being weird. Werner Amann was my artist research-insipration.

^This is a portrait of Heidi I took several months ago. Harsh sunlight portraits!

^ I took this in New Orleans. Shit on the ground in weird light!

Let's see what happens!
